What to do

• Keep cycling, and forget about the law.

• Read this site and check the web links.

• If you get a ticket, let us know. You can fight and win.

• Tell us if you've stopped cycling because of the law.

• Educate (and irritate!) your friends. Write a letter to the editor. Lobby your MP.

• Apply for an Exemption

• If you get stopped by the Police, don't argue. Their job is to enforce the law. They are likely to let you off with a warning, as they prefer to avoid the paperwork of issuing a ticket or taking you to court.

• Don't give up. The helmet law harms cycling and needs to be changed.

Cycling Health is not opposed to the use of helmets, but merely to the element of compulsion. Our position is that individuals should have the right to choose whether or not to use a helmet, without interference by Governments. We believe that the role of Government should be limited to advising the public, without bias, of the pros and cons of helmet use.
